It’s been hard to not spill the beans on this one too early, but I AM SO EXCITED TO SHOUT ABOUT THIS BABY NOW! In late spring, I turned in the final edits for my latest book project, A History of the World in 25 Cities, published by Nosy Crow in collaboration with The British Museum and authors Tracey Turner and Andrew Donkin. I couldn’t be more excited to see it hitting shelves this September!
Some of the more modern cities featured, like NYC and London, were more of a design/aesthetic exercise on my part to figure out how to squeeze a plethora of landmarks and information amidst these cities’ well-documented streets. But when illustrating more ancient places, the artist had to become detective, rifling through curator notes and textbooks to try and imagine how a prehistorical place might have looked through our contemporary lens. Such a fun and fascinating challenge (and quite an honor)!
I’ve always felt that maps have an indispensable value as a historical record, but for me this book underscores the way in which they can help us to connect the dots of our cultures, and bring us a greater understanding of the complexity of human civilization.
I hope you have as much fun flipping through these maps as I did drawing them :)
